Mobile vs. Cable

A clear view of the economic case for operators to offer fixed wireless access in competition with cable operators in the residential market.

In this report, we highlight the U.S. mobile operator stated plans and goals for 5G fixed wireless. We also examine the 5G fixed wireless access capabilities and the chance of competing against today’s cable DOCSIS broadband technology. In light of the latest mobile operator goals, we project where and when they may expand their fixed wireless subscribers. Finally, we re-examine the prospect of 5G fixed wireless in context of fixed-mobile competition between the mobile and cable operators and how that competitive dynamic may play out in the context of the possible $100 billion broadband investment as part of the $2 trillion infrastructure plan being discussed in the halls of the U.S. government.
